Digital Technologies

Anyone want to become a robot engineer or perhaps Rocket Scientist in future? Thinking about developing the next great computer game or App? Then maybe STEM learning is for you.
With recent emphasis on the importance of learning in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), we have introduced Coding and Robotics into the Ranfurly Primary School Curriculum to complement our existing ICT learning program. Developing skills in coding is vital for our students as it promotes problem solving, deep thinking and the development of logic. Learning in this area is also highly engaging, and may support our students in preparing for STEM related careers predicted to evolve over the next 10-20 years.
There are many excellent resources for learning about coding such as Scratch, Tynker and Lightbot. Our Dash and Dots plus Sphero Bolts are excellent resources for teaching robotics, and our students love using these learning materials. With the successful integration of unmanned aerial vehicle (drones) into the 4, 5 & 6 Curriculum. Students using Tello & Make Block drones enjoy the art of flying drones as they learn the conceptual physics of how the aircraft work, their different parts and how to fix them when they crash or break. Besides programming, students learn important soft skills, such as communication, collaboration, critical thinking and problem-solving with STEM. Mathematics Extension and participation in the Mathematics Olympiad and Mathematics games provide great opportunities for developing specific skills in Mathematics and Engineering challenges.
