Beyond the Grade Level and Subject

Let’s take kids off the conveyer belt of education and give them opportunities to learn about the things that interest them beyond the subject areas we teach and even beyond what it says they should learn in each grade level. Learning doesn’t have to fit inside a box.

FLIP is a method where Ranfurly Primary School is able to challenge your child to think beyond their classroom. All young people develop cognitive understandings of the world around them and we believe we are able to provide them with the environment to nurture this.

Our aim is to empower your child to “choose their subjects” based on interest but at the same time provide exposure to all key learning requirements of the Victorian Curriculum. Our key goal is to have your child gaining knowledge and then using that knowledge to effect the lives of ‘someone else’.

Example of FLIP Courses are:
  • Become a Local Tour Guide – research and visit important local sites that they choose and become expert tour guides
  • Paddock to Plate – investigate where our favourite foods come from and bring exciting and healthy options to your lunch box or dinner table
  • Stage FX – Lights! Scripts! Makeup! Props! Action! Do you enjoy performing on stage or behind the scenes?
  • Artists in Residence – excellent opportunity for students to further develop their artistic and creativity skills
  • The World is an amazing Place – students will not only learn about their role as a global citizen but also the features of a range of counties and the factors that influence where and how people live
  • Digital Designers – You will will learn to become confident and creative developers of digital solution through the application of information systems and specifics ways of thinking about problem solving.
  • #FURLYFIT – learn about and participate in different methods of fitness training including CrossFit, Boxing, HIIT, Tabata, Circuits and Boot camps.
  • Become a Waste Warrior – we will research the impact waste has on our sea creatures and improvements you can make in your home to do your bit to help.

Genius Hour in the Grade 4 classroom is an approach to learning built around student curiosity, self-directed learning, and passion-based work.

In traditional learning, teachers map out academic standards, and plan units and lessons based around those standards. In Genius Hour, students are in control, choosing what they study, how they study it, and what they do, produce, or create as a result. As a learning model, it promotes inquiry, research, creativity, and self-directed learning.

Genius Hour provides students freedom to design their own learning during one hour a week during school. It allows students to explore their own curiosity through a self-manifested sense of purpose and study while within the support system of the classroom.
